Fergie to freshen team up

Image text here

Sir Alex Ferguson has promised to ring the changes for Manchester United's UEFA Champions League clash with Schalke.

Although the Red Devils secured an impressive 2-0 win over the Bundesliga outfit in midweek they slumped to a 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

That defeat opened up the title race once again and with another encounter with Schalke to come on Wednesday, Ferguson will look to utilise his squad against Ralf Ragnick's side.

United's boss looks set to rest the likes of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez by recalling Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen, while Paul Scholes returns following suspension.

With Chelsea now just three points behind the Red Devils in the title race and Carlo Ancelotti's men the visitors at Old Trafford on Sunday, Ferguson knows it is a massive week ahead for his side.

Changes

"I will make some changes on Wednesday without question," said Ferguson.

"I will bring Paul Scholes back in, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen.

"We'll need to do that but I will probably keep my experienced players at the back.

"We have a big week ahead. Wednesday is a European semi-final second leg and then the game on Sunday.

"Two massive games, so we will regroup and freshen it up."

Evra: We must beat Chelsea

Source Manutd.com:

Patrice Evra says United "must beat Chelsea" in order to win the Barclays Premier League title following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates stadium.

Aaron Ramsey's second-half strike was enough to seal victory for the Gunners and leave United just three points ahead of the Blues at the top of the table with as many games remaining.

And with Carlo Ancelotti's side visiting Old Trafford next Sunday, the stage is set for an epic title-deciding encounter at the Theatre of Dreams.

Evra, who is hoping to collect his fourth Premier League winners' medal later this season, is confident of success.

The Frenchman told MUTV: "We have our destiny in our hands. We have a massive game against Chelsea. If we want to win the title then we have to beat Chelsea – it's as simple as that. If we don't beat them then we'll be in trouble.

"We just need to play the Man United way. I am not worried because we know we didn't do the things we normally do against Arsenal. We have three games left and need to win every game. Every game is a final."

Defeat at the Emirates brings an end to a run of seven matches unbeaten against the Gunners, a sequence that included two victories in North London - making Sunday's result all the more frustrating for Evra.

"We didn't feel in trouble. We knew how Arsenal would play," he added. "They kept possession of the ball but never looked dangerous.

"Normally when we visit the Emirates we play with speed, power and aggression, and create more chances than we did on Sunday. That is why I am very disappointed."

The Reds had two second-half penalty appeals turned down by referee Chris Foy - once when Michael Owen was felled inside the area and another when Evra himself collided with Theo Walcott. Although the Reds' left-back was keen not to question the officials.

"There were some difficult decisions but I don't want to talk about the referee, the problem was Man United, not the referee," he admitted. "It is easy to find some excuse. We did not play the Man United way and when we don't play the Man United way, we don't deserve anything."

United and City do battle over signings
Manchester United are going head-to-head with Manchester City in a £55m summer transfer tussle over Alexis Sanchez and Wesley Sneijder. United have outlined an £18m offer to Udinese for Chilean winger Sanchez — just weeks after City underlined their desire to sign the player. The move comes with City also trying to gatecrash United's bid for £35m-rated Sneijder, 26, and hoping his Dutch team-mate Nigel de Jong can exert some influence. Both deals are currently in United's favour but City are working hard to persuade the players to come to Eastlands and know they have the greater financial muscle. Udinese want close to £32m for Sanchez, 22, who United have followed since he was a teenager at Chilean side Cobreloa. His performances in Serie A have drawn admirers and he impressed for Chile in the World Cup last summer. City's football administrator Brian Marwood has already been to Italy three times to talk to Udinese officials about Sanchez and emphasised his desire to sign the player but sources at the Italian club say United are the first to show their hand.

In other transfer news, a number of the papers feature quotes from Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who says Bayern are in pole position to sign Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Rummenigge insists "Neuer will not be moving abroad."

All of the papers reflect on United's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates and look ahead to the huge game against Chelsea next Sunday. Arsene Wenger believes United remain "strong favourites" for the title, while Chelsea skipper John Terry is quoted as saying: "We've never allowed ourselves to stop believing we could come back and United know we will never give up."

United and City battle for Sanchez

The Daily Mail reports that the two clubs are in a £55 million summer transfer tussle over Sanchez and Internazionale playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

United have outlined an £18m offer to Udinese for Sanchez, weeks after City underlined their desire to sign the player who was a star at the World Cup.
Big-spending City are also interested in Bayern Munich's teenage midfielder Christian Derflinger according to the same paper.
And the Mail also reports that Arsenal and Liverpool could be priced out of a bid for Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Mamadou Sakho.
A £20m price tag on the 21-year-old means the Gunners may turn to Montpellier's Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa or Emir Spahic.
Tottenham and Sunderland are also looking to Ligue 1 and a £12m bid for Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro (Daily Mirror).
Harrry Redknapp and Steve Bruce are expected to head to France to watch the 20-goal leading scorer.
Another striker on the move, according to the red top, could be Andy Johnson with West Brom planning a summer swoop for the Fulham striker.
And the Mirror claims QPR want to sign Rangers' Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra for their return to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old could be snatched for around £1m with Neil Warnock planning to bring a number of new faces to Loftus Road.
But the Hoops face a disciplinary hearing this week and The Sun claim that the play-offs in the Championship may be delayed.
Rangers clinched promotion to the Premier League on Saturday but could be deducted points if they are found guilty of breaking third-party ownership rules over the signing of Alejandro Faurlin.
A points deduction could see them drop into the play-off places and the League has made contingency plans if Rangers then decide to appeal.
And finally Kevin Davies has become the latest Premier League player to quit Twitter after the Bolton striker and his wife Emma received abusive messages.
Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson closed his account last week.

Man Utd Linked With Three Big Moves

With the summer transfer window just round the corner, Manchester United are being linked with hundreds of players. Here are just a few of the latest rumours...

SNEIJDER TO MANCHESTER?

'Manchester United target Sneijder given £85m price tag' is the headline that is reported by The People as they have added the potential salary of the Dutchman, that being around 10 million a year for 5 years.

What The People are trying to say is that the Glazers are unlikely to spend that amount of money so 'that may leave the field clear for City'. Is Sneijder REALLY heading to the Premier League?

SANCHEZ TO MANCHESTER?

Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez has thrown his transfer to Manchester City in the balance after the Sunday Telegraph claimed that his representatives met with both Manchester clubs as Sir Alex Ferguson personally requested that United try to do a deal with the Chilean man.

The Italian club are resigned to losing Sanchez this summer and will receive around £26.5m for the player, who is said to prefer the move to the red side of Manchester.

The Sunday Telegraph describe this as 'a severe blow to City, who regarded Sanchez as their key summer signing'.

CAHILL TO MANCHESTER?

Gary Cahill is apparently available for the mere price of 15 million pounds in the summer and it seems Roberto Mancini is as unconvinced by Joleon Lescott's poor performances and will move for Cahill this summer (according to the News of the World, anyway) with Shaun Wright-Phillips said to be being offered as a makeweight in the deal.

Chelsea could win title after Man Utd loss - Ferguson

Sir Alex FergusonFerguson conceded that his side's display in London on Sunday was "low key"

Sir Alex Ferguson criticised referee Chris Foy after seeing his Manchester United side lose 1-0 at Arsenal to leave the title race wide open.

Though conceding Arsenal had a case for a penalty, the United manager bemoaned Foy's failure to give the league leaders one of their own late on.

"It gives Chelsea a major chance now - and that's what happens when you get these decisions," he told Sky Sports.

Chelsea trail by three points but will go top if they beat United on Sunday.

Foy missed a clear handball from Nemanja Vidic with Arsenal's Robin van Persie poised to glance Theo Walcott's cross at goal before half-time.

Mike Phelan: Premier League trophy is Manchester United’s to lose

Listen+to+the+full+interview+with+Mike+Phelan+here

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelanbelieves the Premier League title is still theirs to lose despite a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal.

With three games to go the Red Devils are three points clear of Chelsea and the two teams will battle it out next week in a tie that could potentially decide where the trophy will go at the end of the season.

And Phelan feels that although they put in a poor shift against theGunners they are still exactly where they want to be, in first place.

Phelan said: "We are sitting pretty, we've got two home games left and one away, no one said [the league] would be won with three games to go, we'll play right to the end and we're in control.

"Nobody's going to get their own way in this Premier League, we set out this season to do our job over the whole period of the season and we're sitting where we want to be and that is at the top. We're there, we've still got three games to go and it's all down to us."

Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant also insisted the Red Devils will need to pick themselves up from the defeat to Arsenal quickly so that it doesn't impact on the their final games of the season.

He added: "This performance will hurt some of our players and we'll move on quickly, we have to do that. We've got a European game, second leg semi-final [against Schalke] at Old Trafford and we're in control of that game at the moment [too].

"We'll put in a performance and then we'll move on to the Premier League against Chelsea at the weekend."

Man Utd Need Champions Nerve

Delight for Arsenal, irritation for Wayne Rooney.

It is 'squeaky bum time' and no mistake.

As Sir Alex Ferguson predicted on Friday, plenty of drama lay ahead before the spoils can be claimed. He presumably did not want his team to provide it.

The unquantifiable part of professional sport. That aspect which separates champions from also-rans. That ensures Manchester United still head the championship chase whilst Arsenal need to rely on others.

Nerve, bottle, mental toughness. Call it what you will.

At Old Trafford next Sunday, we shall discover who has the most. The answer will do much to determine whether United claim a record 19th crown or Chelsea retain it.

Aaron Ramsey's 56th-minute goal settled a frenzy in north London. But the bigger picture is all about United and Chelsea, and why Arsenal continue to be shoved to the fringes.

Arsenal's supporters made it clear from the first whistle that victory, if not quite making up for the calamitous form over the past two months that has cost them all but the remotest hope of silverware, would at least allow them to feel good about themselves again.

Let us recap. When they awoke on Sunday, February 27, the Gunners were dreaming of the Quadruple.

Since they took the field later that day to face Birmingham in the Carling Cup final, they had won two out of 11 matches, been eliminated from all three knock-out competitions and are still so far distant in the league given the time remaining, they have virtually disappeared from view.

In contrast, United, who lost at Chelsea and Liverpool immediately after that Gunners' D-day, had responded with eight wins, one draw and a single defeat until they tripped up at the Emirates today.

They require five points from three games - providing the first of them comes next weekend - to clinch the championship and know they only need to avoid a three-goal defeat to Schalke at Old Trafford on Wednesday to reach their third Champions League final in four years.

That Arsene Wenger has amassed a group of good players is beyond doubt. They proved it again in this fully deserved triumph.

So, what is the difference?

Though Wenger continues to insist Cesc Fabregas, absent today, was misquoted, part of his recent damning interview struck a very delicate chord.

"You enjoy yourself, during a phase of the championship - like this year, for example, when we were still in four different competitions. And you say to yourself 'Here I have everything!' But then that final point is missing and it's then when you have to make a decision: either go out and win or develop players."

Experience brings the added extra. Like Nemanja Vidic getting his body in the way of a dangerous Jack Wilshere burst that sends the Arsenal man tumbling on the edge of the area without getting a free-kick.

The refusal to panic or do anything silly when Arsenal were dominating and threatening menace with every attack.

Even the 'professionalism' or cheating, whichever you prefer, of Vidic flicking Theo Walcott's cross away from Robin van Persie with his hand, which would surely have brought a penalty to the hosts and a red card for the United skipper.

In his ivory tower in Zurich, FIFA president Sepp Blatter must have loved that.

Coupled with Chelsea's 'goal that never was' at Stamford Bridge last night, Blatter has concrete proof that refereeing errors harm the game's credibility.

The point is that the Premier League's youngest side of the season - 23 years and 296 days on average - would have required the intervention of Chris Foy to provide Edwin van der Sar with his first shot to save, which is not what champion sides should require when they are at home and dominant.

Eventually, the breakthrough came. For the first time United faltered.

Adjusting in central midfield following the withdrawal of Anderson, Park Ji-sung failed to track Aaron Ramsey's forward burst and were unable to prevent the 20-year-old finding the bottom corner.

It was only to be expected the visitors would respond with vigour, just as, after what he had failed to give before, referee Chris Foy would ignore Michael Owen's penalty claim.

The cheers at the final whistle did not just come from this part of London.

But Arsenal's sobering realisation is that next Sunday at Old Trafford, only United have a chance to silence them.

United Eye Shay Given

As veteran star Edwin Van Der Sar is due to retire when the season comes to an end, Manchester United have just started to monitor Manchester City's Shay Given.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has attempted to tie-up previous deals for both Schalke custodian Manuel Neuer and Liverpool's experienced goalkeeper Pepe Reina and has also apparently failed to persuade Atletico Madrid youngster David De Gea to leave Spain for a bigger challenge at the prestigious Barclays Premier League club.

Shay Given, 35 this year, has pretty much became a benchwarmer for Roberto Mancini's side throughout the campaign after failing to outclass Joe Hart for a spot in the starting 11.

The former Newcastle stopper has not even featured a single minute of Barclays Premier League action so far and has previously been strongly linked with moves to clubs like Arsenal and Fulham. But its reported that United may be now the latest club to line up a bid for the experienced stopper.
