No Chance Of Fergie's Retirement This Summer

Former Manchester United defender David May says there's no chance Sir Alex Ferguson will retire this summer if he lands an historic double.

United are on course for Champions League and Premier League glory this season, leading to suggestions Fergie could choose to bow out of Old Trafford on a high.

But May insists the 69-year-old will be going nowhere whatever the outcome of this campaign, as he still has the hunger to add many more trophies to his collection.

"He wants to be like the Barcelona's, Real Madrid's, the Bayern Munich's, where they've won plenty and plenty of European Cups"David May

"I wouldn't think for one minute he would [step down]," said May, speaking to Drive Time. "When he first joined Man United he was well documented in saying he wanted to knock Liverpool off their perch for the titles.

"We're very close to doing that. If he doesn't do it this year, he'll want to do it next year. And he'll also want to do it in the Champions League. He wants to be like the Barcelona's, Real Madrid's, the Bayern Munich's, where they've won plenty and plenty of European Cups."

Barcelona are many people's favourites to win at Wembley on May 28, but May says United have got a great chance of defeating the Catalan giants.

"I think their back four is very gettable," he added. "Puyol and Pique are not fantastically quick, Mascherano has been playing in there as well. If you can get Hernandez and Rooney at them, Valencia and Nani as well, we've got plenty of pace going forward. It's just the other way. If you can stop Messi and that type of player, then we've got a great chance.

"They've got so many good players in there but it's a one-off game. That's how the players have to look at it. You can't start worrying about who you're going to be marking and things like that, you just have to play the game, try your best, and make sure you do your own job good.

"I honestly think that the two centre-halves you can get at them. As long as we're defensively tight, we've got a great chance."

How United Can Beat Barcelona :Full Article

There are easier tasks than this. Finding a way to beat one of the best teams ever to walk onto a football pitch is not easy but Sir Alex  and his Manchester United team must find a way of doing that if they are to lift the European Cup at Wembley.

Manchester United Barcelona Rome

These are my propositions providing everyone is fit and available.

First things first, United win the defensive battle. If Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are fit then that will be a huge boost. United have only conceded four goals all competition, half than Barca, so there's already reason to be in confident mood.

But here's the conundrum: How do you stifle that Barcelona midfield but attack them at the same time.

The best way to get at Barcelona is down the wings with pace, so I would definitely start Antonio Valencia on the right. His pace, crossing, dribbling ability, defensive work and finishing would cause any team problems.

On the left I'd have  Ji Sung, purely for his tenacity and longevity. He can harry and hassle that Barcelona midfield all night long while others take advantage of the space that it creates. did this supremely well in the first leg against Chelsea and it proved vital.

The dilemma left is who and how many you play in central midfield to stem that unbelievably strong Barca midfield as well as having enough players to go forward and create chances for yourself.

You can attack….

One way to go about it would be to sacrifice a central midfielder and play  off with  and Carrick in the middle. This may be a risky strategy against a team with Barcelona's prowess in midfield but it would give United more attacking options, something which Arsenal suffered badly from when they played Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

In that game, Robin Van Persie was completely stranded up front and had very little support from the Arsenal midfield, thus allowing Barcelona to take control and continue to attack wave after wave. With Rooney playing behind Hernandez, you would not have the same problem because Rooney would act as the linkup man between the midfield and attack.

The problem this leaves, though, is the vulnerability of the midfield. When you have the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta up against you, you need all the midfielders you can get. However, Arsenal used a similar lineup to this at the Emirates and it paid off as they won the game 2-1, albeit courtesy of some wayward Barcelona finishing.

If you were to play this team then the key would be to score first and take a lead into the second half where you can then use your replacements to hold onto that lead.

My bench would be: Kuszack, O'Shea, Smalling, , Scholes, Anderson, Berbatov. If United were leading on the hour mark then I would bring  on for Hernandez and play a five-man midfield with Rooney up top on his own. I'd also be inclined to bring the anergy of Anderson on for Giggs.

Or you can pack the midfield and sit back…

I think this strategy would prove successful in preventing Barcelona's making forward progress. The energy and tenacity of Fletcher, Anderson and Park would stifle that midfield but the problem you have is who would support Rooney up front.

If you were to do this then I'd also consider to perhaps start Nani ahead of Park, purely for his attacking outlet and ability to create something out of nothing. But his lack of defensive qualities would count against him.

This choice of lineup would force you to flood the bench with attacking options, the likes of Berbatov and Hernandez would have to be there.

My choice…

My starting XI would be somewhere in the middle, you need the energy in the midfield but you can't afford not to have an attacking outlet. The other key decision is who to start at right back; John O'Shea or Rafael Da Silva. I'd edge towards O'Shea, purely for his experience.

I also feel that Giggs has to start. He maybe getting on a bit but a man with two Champions League's winners medals cannot be left out. He was the star of the show against Chelsea and the United midfield can look lost without him. I'd start him behind Rooney so he can play the free role, linking up between the striker and midfield.

Bench: Kuzsack, Smalling, Fabio, Anderson, Scholes, Nani, Hernandez.

Having conceded four less goals than Barcelona in the competition and gone unbeaten so far, there are plenty of encouraging signs for United fans as we look ahead to a European Cup final against the mighty Barcelona at Wembley. And it does not get better than that.

Chelsea & Manchester United monitoring Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero - agent

The Argentine's representative has claimed that the Premier League's top two are watching the 22-year-old, and has refused to rule out a move away from the Spanish side

Sergio Aguero's agent has claimed that Chelsea and Manchester United are tracking the Atletico Madrid striker.

The 22-year-old has put in strong performances at the Vicente Calderon, and has been linked with a move to the Premier League over the last few years.

The Argentine's representative, Bruno Satin, has also refused to rule out the possibility of Aguero making a move away from the Spanish side in the summer.

"A summer move? Good question. Currently we have no idea," Satin told Sport.co.uk.

"Players like Sergio [Aguero] are always being tracked by the world's top clubs.

"Chelsea and Manchester United are big clubs, and they monitor him, but so do Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Barcelona. These are the clubs that regularly monitor the best.

"Sergio is still only 22 and he has had only four years in Europe playing at a club which is not a regular in the Champions League. Obviously the boy would like to play football at the highest level. But there is nothing concrete at the minute; we have to look at things in the summer."

Atletico are currently fifth in La Liga, but need to close a gap of eight points in four games to stand a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Ferguson handed fitness boost with Rooney set for return ahead of Chelsea title decider

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra should both be fit for Manchester United's Premier League title showdown with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Rooney missed training on Tuesday after reporting for duty with a tight hamstring and was not named on the bench for last night's 4-1 Champions League semi-final win over Schalke.

Evra was introduced as a second-half substitute but took a knock that at one point looked set to warrant Ferguson making another change.

However, the full-back quickly recovered and Ferguson revealed Rooney's absence was purely precautionary.

'Patrice got a kick.

'I was ready to substitute him but he said he was OK.

'Wayne will be all right. I wasn't prepared to take a risk.'

Samir Nasri: What I like about Rooney

Wayne Rooney Referee Chris Foy shows a yellow card to Wayne Rooney of Manchester United as he is booked during the Barclays Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on May 1, 2011 in London, England.

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri was bursting full of praise for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney in a recent interview. The Frenchman, who is currently top of the DBS Football poll as to who your player of the season is, was speaking to the News of The World, when he said that United's star striker is a "nightmare for a defence", and "the archetype of the modern striker".

"What impresses the most about [Wayne Rooney] is his first touch, his ball control. This gives him the ability to beat a man or turn towards where the play is."
"He likes running from deep and can do a lot of damage. He's also their first defender, which is a nightmare for a defence. When he loses the ball he's prepared to sprint 40 meters to win it back."
"And then he either wins it back or fouls you, so you know you have to get rid of it, because he gives a dig."
"The amazing overhead kick he scored against Manchester City underlines all his qualities."
"Timing, risk-taking, a good eye, and technique. He has it all. He is the archetype of the modern striker."

Nasri's praise for Rooney simply highlights how well the Englishman has turned his season around from crushing off-field allegations leading to poor form to getting back into his groove. He is once again threatening the best of defences with his creative, cutting passing and movement just behind Chicharito at the head of the team. Nasri was able to help Arsenal to victory over United last week, but the Red Devil's remain in the driving seat, with a crucial game against Chelsea this week end.

Nasri and Arsenal will surely be watching the game in anticipation with hope for their frail title bid, whilst admiring the qualities of Rooney in the United side.

Fletcher can bring down Barcelona

Judging by his teamsheet last night, Sir Alex Ferguson turned his attention to Barcelona long before a shadow Manchester United side finished off Schalke at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has just over three weeks in which to ponder this: what does he have to do to ensure his team are not humiliated again in the manner they were the last time these two sides met in the final, in 2009.

Back then, there were many - me included - who thought United's victory against Arsenal in the semi-final pointed the tactical route to victory. Particularly in the away leg at the Emirates, Ferguson's side had given a masterclass in counter-attacking, breaking at pace to unhinge the Gunners back line. Barcelona proved to be less generous opponents and United were brushed aside with an ease that bordered on the contemptuous. Mind, a best-of combo gleaned from the ranks of Brazil 1970, Milan 1989 and Real Madrid 2002 would have struggled. Some of Barca's possession football that night was so good it was impossible to see how they might be beaten.

But if Ferguson - a student of history - is looking for clues, he could do worse than go back into his own club's past, to the last time United contested a European Cup final at Wembley, when they played Benfica. It was - by all accounts - not a great game 41 years ago. Scrappy, tetchy, nervy, both teams seemed quickly drained by the fierce humidity of a baking hot early summer's evening. But what was notable about United's tactical approach was how it was based around shackling their opponents' best player. Although by then past his peak, Eusebio was still reckoned to be, after Pele, the finest in the world. Pace, power, athleticism: he had it all. Plus a clinical eye for goal. So United's manager Matt Busby assigned Nobby Stiles to do a man-to-man job on the Portuguese with David Sadler doubling up on him when necessary.

Stiles in particular relished the role. He had done precisely that for England in the World Cup semi-final two summers previously. And he set about his work with snarling tenacity, only once letting his opponent out of his sights. Mind, it was a dangerous moment. With five minutes to go and the scores level, Eusebio found himself one-on-one with United's keeper Alec Stepney. Stiles, blinking myopically from the halfway line, could only watch as his rival bore down on goal. Fortunately for Stiles, Eusebio blasted the ball straight at Stepney, who found the ball lodged in his midriff. In a show of considerable sportsmanship, the Portuguese generously applauded the goalie for his effort. A relieved Stiles continued his duties through extra time to help steer United to victory.

It would be a woeful underestimate of a Barcelona team way more elevated than that Benfica to suggest they could be similarly defeated by simply taking one man out of the game. But the fact remains, even if a successful marking job alone cannot guarantee that one of the several other supreme talents of the Barca team will not come to the fore, unless Ferguson can find a way to stop Lionel Messi he has no chance.

Which is why he will have been so relieved to welcome Darren Fletcher back last night. Struck down by a virus, Fletcher has been missing from United's ranks for the past few weeks. In truth, such is the nature of his work, there are not many who noticed he was gone. But Ferguson knows - especially with Owen Hargreaves incapacitated - he has few in his squad as capable of man-marking Messi as Fletcher. Remember the Scotland captain absented himself from such duty last time by getting sent off at the Emirates. And with no one else to take on the job, Messi was allowed to run free, embarrassing United's centre-backs by even having the audacity to score with his head.

Fletcher would dog his every step, harry and hare at him, running him into parts of the pitch where he can no longer act as such an effective conduit to passing movements. Sure, there's still Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and David Villa to worry about. But with Messi diminished, even they would not be able to conjure up the passing patterns with quite the same ease they showed in '09. Fletcher on Messi has to be the start of any tactical planning to subdue the Catalans.

And it also leads to this unexpected conclusion: with this in mind, Darren Fletcher has claim to be reckoned United's most important player ahead of the final. Who would have thought that?

Ajax have received no offers for Premier League target Maarten Stekelenburg - agent

The Netherlands international is continually being linked with a move abroad, but his representative has revealed that there has not been any contact with foreign clubs

Maarten Stekelenburg, Ajax

Rob Jansen, the agent of Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, has downplayed the rumours linking his client with a move abroad in the summer transfer window.

The Netherlands international has been linked with clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Juventus and AC Milan in the past few months, but there has not been any dialogue with interested parties yet.

Jansen was quoted as saying by calciomercato.it: "There's nothing going on at the moment. There hasn't been any contact with Italian teams or with other foreign teams. With no team at all.

"Whether he prefers to move to a foreign league? I can't confirm anything at the moment. There's still the possibility that he'll sign a contract extension with Ajax, too."

The 28-year-old's current contract with Ajax runs until the summer of 2012, but the Amsterdam side are widely expected to cash in on him this summer.

Ryan Giggs admits Manchester United want to 'put right' 2009 defeat when they face Barcelona in Champions League final

Ryan Giggs has admitted Manchester United will head to Wembley for the Champions League final looking to "put right" their 2009 defeat to Barcelona.

United booked their place in the May 28 final on Wednesday night with a one-sided 4-1 (6-1 on aggregate) win over Schalke at Old Trafford in the second leg of their semi-final.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side now have the opportunity to avenge their 2-0 loss to Barcelona in Rome two years ago, when the Red Devils failed to perform at anywhere near their best.

Giggs said: “When you lose a final and you get beaten, that happens.

“The problem with Rome is that we didn't turn up and produce the football we knew we were capable of.

“Hopefully we can put that right at Wembley. Hopefully in the final we can prove what a good team we are.

“They [Barcelona] are a very good team with probably the best player in the world [Lionel Messi], so that's now our problem. We've got to go out and prove we are a very good team.”

The 2011 final will be United's third in four years, including their 2008 triumph in Moscow, and Giggs is hoping that the squad will be spurred on by 'home' advantage and the fact the club's first European Cup was won at Wembley in 1968.

“It's great for us being an English side going to Wembley and the Champions League final being there,” added the Welshman.

“It's a tremendous stadium steeped in history. We have won the European Cup there so hopefully we can do it again.

“It's great playing the finals at Wembley no matter what it is and the Champions League doesn't get any bigger than that so we are looking forward to it.”

Giggs, 37, scored the opening goal of the semi-final tie against Schalke in Germany and while he admits he is surprised by United's success in the competition, the midfielder believes the Premier League leaders have answered their critics this season.

He added: “It's tough getting to Champions League finals so it's a tremendous achievement by the team to get to three finals in four years.

“For me, personally, at this age you don't expect it. It's a total bonus.

“You will always have people that knock you as United, earlier in the season we probably weren't playing the football that Manchester United played in the past but we were winning games.

“Gradually at the turn of the year we played some great stuff and have had some great performances and some great results.”

Papers: SAF Seeking Jose's help

Ferguson: Jose will help us beat Barca
Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he would be seeking advice from Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, who was at the centre of the battle that erupted with Barcelona in their semi-final as he looks to avenge United's 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in Rome. "I speak to Jose a lot, I spoke to him last week," said Ferguson, who saw Antonio Valencia, Darron Gibson and a double from Anderson secure a resounding triumph. "Real Madrid is a different team to us for a start and we will depend on our own knowledge because it's not as if we haven't seen them before. But we'll take the information because Jose is very helpful that way."
Paul Joyce, Daily Express

The Mirror
report Xavi's claims Manchester United will be favourites in the final on English soil. The Spain playmaker says: "We're back at Wembley but now Manchester United are the favourites. They're a great team that also likes to play football and perhaps that's good for us."

Martin Samuel in The Daily Mail writes: "It will be the match the tournament wants, it is the match the people want, and it is the match history demands. On May 28, Manchester United play Barcelona at Wembley in an occasion that will stir memories, ghosts and, we hope, hearts." Meanwhile, Darron Gibson rightly picks up plenty of accolades in the press, withThe Daily Star headlining Gibson is a real Dazzler.

The Daily Mail also highlight Darren Fletcher's return as a major boost as the manager reserved more praise for his fellow Scot in the press conference. "Some players are big-game players and he is one. The perfect example is Mark Hughes, he was one of the best big-game players in United's history. He never failed in a big game and Darren is the same type of player."
